John A. Valenzuela, Ph.D. is the Dean of Admissions at American University Preparatory. Dr. Valenzuela has over 10 years of experience in the private boarding school community as both an educator and an administrator. He has traveled the world searching for amazing students. Admissions at AUP, he states, is about connecting students to the mission and the lifestyle of living in Downtown LA. He admits he enjoys making applicants sweat in a tough interview, but he knows it stimulates conversation and rigor that every student should anticipate when coming to AUP.
Dr. Valenzuela will also lead the Health and Wellness committee, a position that suits another of his skill sets as a professional in the mental health community. He will join us in the dorms four nights per week. He seeks to establish health and wellness as a priority for every student and staff member at AUP. His passion for education has led him to teach in elementary school, high school, college, and graduate school. He is a published author and a speaker at national conferences.
Dr. “V” and his wife live in the quaint town of Ojai, CA with their three daughters and two dogs. He enjoys running, camping, and sharing his love of culture, wine, and cooking.
