FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Building global leaders by understanding the world and changing it!
What makes AUP unique?
American University Preparatory School is unique in that it is a private boarding school located in one of the most dynamic cities in the United States. Students at AUP will grow and develop in myriad ways — academically, socially, emotionally, and creatively.
Our students will stand out among their peers and we are quite confident that the leadership and independence they develop here will be unmatched. The school was conceived and led by a group of visionary international educators with experience in K-12, undergraduate education, and graduate/professional training.
The Advisory Board is comprised of innovative and accomplished local educators, entrepreneurs, scientists, and counselors. Each member brings a special brand of expertise and commitment to the school. Our students are the direct beneficiaries of this blend of talent.
Why should I send my son or daughter to your school?
AUP is a co-educational boarding school where living, learning and expanding one’s horizons are full-time activities. Our environment has been designed from the ground up with boarding students in mind. It is an open, creative, and secure environment.
We have a team of residential life staff that is available to support and assist in students’ lives after their academic day is over. Our goal at AUP is to not only prepare students for the academic rigors of college, but also to prepare them to be independent and adventurous individuals.
Our hope is that once our students leave AUP, they will have become confident young adults who thrive in the collegiate atmosphere away from home.
Why is AUP a boarding school?
Our Advisory Board and the school leadership are firmly committed to providing the best education possible for our students. We believe that the boarding school environment provides our students with a level of independence and personal responsibility unobtainable at a day or commuter school.
By the time they reach college age, our students have already learned how to manage on their own. The transition to college and university life will be eased considerably.
Is it possible to be a day student at AUP?
AUP is primarily a boarding school and every student is expected to live and study here. However, we realize that there may be special circumstances where the boarding school environment might not be appropriate.
The Headmaster and the Advisory Board will consider these requests on a case-by-case basis.
Is AUP accredited by a recognized certification body?
American University Preparatory School is an entirely new approach to education in Los Angeles, and we are not a division of an existing school. Therefore, accreditation is a process in which we are currently engaged.
The three primary associations with which we are working are the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS).
We are working closely with all three associations and expect to be fully recognized and accredited before our inaugural class begins to apply for college admission.
How can international students enroll at AUP?
AUP not only welcomes international students but, in fact, the school fully intends to develop a student population that reflects the diversity of Los Angeles and our global community. International students can start the process of application by finding more about the process on our international students admissions page.
